I bought this camcorder before our vacation trip to Disney World and Cruise. This camcorder obviously is meant for amature use and so the controls should have been much more user friendly. Before this one, I had a Panasonic MiniDV. Most of the outdoor video were overexposed.
I do a lot of video as I have 5-yr old with lots of events happening all the time. The zoom is a real weak point although you may not get much better on the currently available consumer HD camcorders (Sony offers a 12x). Overall, it is an ok camcorder. So I could not afford the hard drive based Sony camcorders as I will very quickly run into shortage of space. The main reason that I bought it over the Sony models, is because of the recording media. The camcorder is ok but not great at all.
The sound quality is flat which is understandable as it is a MiniDV based camcorder. It's a shame that Sony no longer makes any amature level MiniDV based camcorders, if they were, I would have no question about buying it from Sony. The picture quality obviously is better as this is HD and is more pricey, but it did not give me anything close to movie quality picture (claimed per Canon and also a few reviewers). It was very difficult to find out how to adjust the exposure.
Recharges in a reasonable period of time. It's nothing fancy, but it works as advertised. Very long life, which is just what I needed.
You don't have to change your battery every time (I use The DM 50 stereo microphone what needs power). And I still got enough place to see throught the lens. The camcorder get heavier specially the bottom, but it doesn't matter specially if you use the wide angle converter.
It usually lasts me a tape and half, which is about 90 minutes, with about 50 times on and off. Since I use a HV30 with it. One star off for not lasting two tapes, but solid enough for a trip in the field. I use this battery for my trip to LA, Vegas and Grand Canyon. It definitely could last you longer than a day if you are not shooting intensively for something like 2 hours.
Although it is a little expensive, I use a video light a lot so the extended capacity is a must. The Canon quick charger is a must with this batery as well. It's a great accessory for extended use.
